Zika Virus 101
Like Lyme disease the Zika virus can be sexually transmitted. Unlike Lyme disease which is also usually transmitted via mosquito bites the Zika virus can effect future offspring. Although not as long lasting or possibly devastating to the infected’s life as Lyme disease can be, the affects are devastating to the unborn child. It can be passed to the mother via the father’s sperm, then from the mother to the fetus or from an expectant mother to her unborn child. The virus has caused brain defects worldwide, specifically microcephaly. Characterized by an underdeveloped brain and skull.
