What Items’ Costs or Availability Are Affected by the Chinese Tariffs
The United States increased the level of tariffs from 10 percent to 25 percent on approximately $200 billion worth of Chinese imports in 2019. The USA began the process of raising tariffs on other imports from China, approximately another $300 billion in goods.
Simply put this means the consumer pays more for these items than they did prior to the tariffs and that they will receive less on those items that they export to China. The tariff costs were passed on down to the end user with each of us paying between 10-25% more for these products than we did before. How much it affects you will of course depend upon both whether you are involved in a business that is export driven and how many Chinese goods you purchase for personal use.
Which goods would you expect to see affected? Below is a summarized list that will help you to know which items you should stock up on when you find them cheaper or find alternatives. Basically, the easy list includes:
- Seafood and seafood products
- Beans, beets, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, celery, cucumbers, garlic, lentils, okra, onions, peas, peppers, mushrooms, potatoes, radishes, spinach, squash, sweet corn, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and turnips
- Beer, wine, fruit juices and mineral water.
- Various types of wheat; oats, barley, rice, corn
- Various uncooked pasta, various bread, pastries, cakes and biscuits
- Butter, whey products and eggs.
- Almonds, cashews, chestnuts, clementines, coconuts, cashews, apples, pineapples, dates, guavas, figs, mandarin oranges, peaches, berries, hazelnuts, oranges, pecans, macadamia nuts, pears and quinces
- Pork, beef intestines, rabbit meat and frog legs
- Cane sugar and certain candies that do not contain cocoa
- Paper products including toilet paper, writing paper, and newsprint paper
- Shampoo, shaving cream, tanning oil, and some soaps
- Televisions, DVRs and cameras
- Some furniture
- Gloves, glue and honey
- Industrial equipment
- Textiles
