What is a Derecho Storm?

I had never heard of a derecho storm until one swept through the Midwest this past week. I do however, think that 20 yrs ago while living overseas that I may have actually experienced one. I have always described it as a landlocked hurricane!
What it is it really? How does it happen? I don’t have those answers, so I looked it up and here is what I found.
