If you have ever had food poisoning then you don’t need a definition! But for those of you who have been lucky enough never to have had it, food poisoning is caused by eating or drinking a food or beverage that is contaminated with a virus, bacteria, parasite, or a chemical toxin. The symptoms for the milder form of this illness include abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. This can worsen  depending upon the cause and which specific organ is affected by the particular toxin. If you or your patient display signs of dehydration, has blood in the stools, runs a fever, bloats or the illness lasts longer than 72 hours, skip the home remedies and see your physician as the ingested item has caused a more serious form of food poisoning.

In a SHTF scenario foods and beverages will be especially prone to bacterial and viral toxins. This is an illness that is unpleasant to say the lest under normal conditions and could quickly become more serious during a time of crisis when your health is already at risk. Even just the stress of the situation can lower your immune system enough to turn simple illnesses into serious ones. To avoid the issue altogether be very cautious of your food preparations and storage procedures. Always heed the warnings of smell and texture if the food or drink smells off or looks bad when in doubt throw it out.

If you or a member of your group or family should contract food poisoning keep hydrated and  there are some simple home remedies that can make the course of the illness a little less unpleasant. See the top ten home remedies at the link below
