There was a time in this country that a mass shooting was so rare and unusual that the day of and for years after they were unforgettable. Now they happen often enough that it is hard to recall them all. As frequent now as some natural disasters. We need to prepare for the eventuality of the next one.

The biggest difficulty in surviving a mass shooting is the type of weapon that is favored. More crimes are committed with handguns with the exception of mass shootings. High powered semi-automatics are the weapon of choice in these crimes. Survivability drops because of the speed of not only the shooter but the bullets themselves, which cause massive internal injuries and profuse bleeding.

So, the best way to prepare to survive and help others survive a mass shooting (other than locking yourself up in your home and avoiding all crowds forever) is to learn to treat these wounds prior to the first responders arrive. In fact, during this type of crisis we are the first responders.
