Unless you’re a self-sufficient hermit you must leave your home some time during the cold winter months. Even on those milder days the weather can change very quickly catching you in route. Knowing how you can survive in a freezing cold car is imperative if you live in colder climates.

I spent many winters in northern Minnesota where it becomes extremely cold during the winter season. Especially if you are new to the area and the inclement weather I plead with you to take precautions and make preparations at the beginning of the season and keep those in place until the season is completely over! There were more deaths of new comers or visitors during those months due to the cold than I care to remember.

There are 3 main topics or precautions you can take that can literally save your life.

  1. Make sure someone knows where you’re going. What route you’re taking and when you’re expecting to be back.

Cell service can become hit and miss in bad weather as well as along certain routes. The sooner you’re missed the better your chances are of being found alive. Remember snow fall over as little as an hour or two can completely cover a stalled car from view.

2.   Keep your vehicle in good operating order.

The better maintained your car/truck is the less likely you are to find yourself stranded.

3.    Keep your get home bag seasonally prepared and make sure it is always in which ever vehicle you are driving or riding in.
