After the initial event, after the immediate chaos, you may want to become the go to guy. That is a personal choice completely dependent upon  your unique personality, skills and situation.

But during the event and immediately after, the last thing you want to do is draw attention to yourself. While those panicking masses are running amok, while the desperate are seeking what you might have, or while those that see the event as an opportunity to either gouge others or take advantage of the lawlessness that tends to first strike any disaster. Is a time when you want to stay out of view off their radar and out of harms way.
