SHTF Friendly Hobbies
As a parent I sometimes feel a bit guilty for taking some me time for hobbies I enjoy. But having a hobby does help make a well rounded person and relieves stress. There are just things I really enjoy doing and find that if I do say so myself. I am good at.
Now thinking a bit more strategically, I have come to realize that my hobbies not only make me a happier person but they are good training and skills that will be useful in a post SHTF world as well as on occasion today’s world. BTW the happier you are the less stress you experience the healthier you tend to be overall. Now if I could just convince the family that my affection for duel purpose unusual gear is also healthy!

Can Your Hobbies Help You Survive?
- Hunting Those that love tramping through the woods in search of prey. A great survival skill if a day ever comes where hunting could be your only source of protein. The hides and other parts of the animal can be used from the hide to the hooves, even the feathers
- Leather working This skill can turn the hides from the hunt into everything from footwear to fur blankets.
- Knitting and crochet Gives you the know how to produce blankets, hats, mittens, gloves and other clothing items that will be necessary for warmth and comfort.
- Fitness Helps you build the strength and stamina for what could become a strenuous way of life in the future.
- Jewelry making The metal skills and knowledge of stones and their properties. As well as the ability to make intricate items from metal and possibly string
- Fishing More than enjoying a lazy day on the water, but obtaining a food source as well.
- Gardening You will become the most popular of people during harvest season and your knowledge life saving for those who aren’t gardeners. Even if now during normal times you prefer decorative plants
- Trapping The same reasons as hunting and fishing as well as obtaining fur
- Furrier The ability to turn the fur of an animal hunted or trapped into good use for warmth and comfort items.
- Reading Use the knowledge gained to teach yourself or others how to do what needs to be done. As well as educating the next generation of survivors.
- Cooking and Baking The ability to cook and bake from scratch will be invaluable to making the items grown and hunted edible for all.
- Shooting Whether it is hunting or target, this skill will be necessary for self defense and hunting.
- Wood working Carpentry skills of all kinds will be necessary for creating and/or maintaining structures.
- Martial Arts A great self defense skill to have
- Sports Almost all sports teach teamwork and help with obtaining and maintaining physical fitness.
- Canning Excellent use for today and post shift for preserving foods
- Dehydrating Even if today you’re drying beautiful flowers this knowledge will translate to an ability to dehydrate foods for storage.
- Amateur Radio Information on what is going on will be imperative to surviving and communication between groups can assist in rebuilding and maintaining interpersonal relationships.
- Geocaching Excellent training especially if you are bugging out and will need supplies along the way. Or for those bugging in who understand the wisdom of having some of your supplies hidden.
- Video gaming Teaches hand eye coordination that may be useful later for learning to shoot either for hunting or self defense.
- Macramé Useful in making the best use of your paracord or other string materials for anything from storage containers to clothing.
- Mechanics Being able to take one machine apart and create another or to keep a current machine operating will be crucial skills
- Blacksmithing The same uses as jewelry making on a larger scale.
- Horseback riding This may be your only method of transportation some day. Knowing how now will save on the wear and tear on yourself as well as the horse.
- Swimming The same benefits as physical fitness plus the ability to get yourself and others to safety.
- Music Morale will be much more important than anyone tends to realize. Nothing can raise spirits like making or listening to music.
- Archery Great for stealth hunting and even self defense.
There are dozens more hobbies from which skills can be learned for later survival use! So enjoy your free time by learning and participating in something you love.
