Personal & Situational Awareness
(2 links)
When we get in our own homes, neighborhood, or community we are in our zone and our personal awareness tends to decrease substantially. This is natural it’s our own stomping grounds.
But we still need to enter and leave that zone in code yellow to ensure our situation is normal and safe. For instance, would be that when you enter your home, you are personally aware if there is anything out of order. Are your electronics where they should be? A real obvious sign that your security has been breached and your situational awareness needs to increase high enough to ensure that an unwelcome stranger isn’t still in your home. Was your door still locked upon your arrival? Was there a strange vehicle in your driveway or even just parked on your street? Just being aware of these personal tip offs that your situation may not be as secure as usual can save you or a neighbor from danger.
We all have an invisible circle around ourselves that others need to respect, or they are deemed to be aggressive. We are more situational aware when we are out of our comfort zones. It is almost an unspoken law that particularly in that environment. One of the best examples I read of late regarding this concept was when people enter an elevator. Everyone on board adjusts to the new person entering by moving to allow each individual their personal space.
Obviously, this is a skill that should be finely honed for a survival scenario. You can learn more about the concept and ways to practice sharping your natural instincts when it comes to awareness at the links below
