Ever wonder as we scramble around today attempting to find the most economical and safest way to preserve our garden harvests how they did it back in the “ole days” prior to mason jars, dehydrators, freezers, food savers and zip lock bags? How did they feed themselves when the wagons were moving west, the cowboys were out on a trail drive, or they lived in a hunter’s cabin miles and miles from the next person never mind what they considered civilization? Once they had preserved the food how did they then transport and cook it?
