Instant Boil a Meals
These kinds of meals are just what I had in mind when I first began dehydrating my own produce and meats.
At the time I was living in Kansas which is of course famous for its tornados. I thought I was so clever as to have stocked our dehydrated and emergency meals into the only room in the home that could serve as a shelter room. During that time of preparedness this wasn’t a root cellar but a room with re-enforced walls, no windows, one power outlet and one light fixture in the center of the small room. Which was located away from power grids and water pipes. So, I prepared the room, with storage goods, 4 chairs, a table, several gallons of water, several flashlights, a few blankets, pillows portable water, first aid gear and a hot plate.
Then came the day I had to move my family into the room during a tornado. I set the children up with crayons and color books at the table set up under the only light with flashlights beside them and proceeded to gather the ingredients for dinner from the stored goods. By the time I had them all gathered we had lost power and now I had no way to cook them! Not so smart after all!!! I fed the children dried fruit and cold cereal that night before laying them in their pretend camping beds for the night in the storm room.
I made some changes before our next need to use the room. First, I put together the individual instant meals as pictured above so there would be no searching for ingredients. 2nd I purchased a small propane stove which would fit on the floor just outside the storm room door near a window left slightly open as was the practice back then to open window in the home to allow winds to blow through with less resistance rather than blowing against rigid walls etc. I also purchased some good quality thermoses. The next time when the sky got dark along with sending the children into the storm room, and opening the home’s windows, I also set the tea pot on the propane stove which heated the pot very quickly and before the warning sirens even began to blow, we had hot meals cooking in our thermos while we entertained the children until it was time to eat.
