Hand Milking a Cow or Goat
Hand milking a cow or goat isn’t as easy as one may think. I grew up in dairy country and have used an electronic milker many times and have tried my hand at milking by hand. First issue is that not every cow is socialized to humans and may not stand nicely and allow you to fumble around as you learn. She become aggravated and agitated especially if you are nervous. Beware they can and do kick when agitated! You also need strong hands, it is not with a gentle tug that milk begins to stream. When first beginning I would advise you have a partner to hold the cow and switch off until finished. One other tip learned in a dairy barn that I did not see mentioned in the following tutorial is we didn’t use the first few squirts from each cow to insure any remaining bacteria after cleaning the udder didn’t end up in our final product.
