How to Know if You’ve Been Hacked
The worst way to find out you’ve been hacked is when your bank account is empty and not because you didn’t make the deposit! There are however, other reasons hackers get into your information. To steal and sell your information, to impersonate you, to stalk you, or to use your information themselves. No matter why they do it, the result is always unpleasant for the person who has been hacked.
In my own situation a few years ago, I came back from a trip to find that a fake me had opened a website offering easy loans to others in financial troubles. Using my name these hackers were gaining access to other’s financial information including addresses and social security numbers. I learned about it when my own bank account was cleaned out by their advertising expenses! I had given my information to a car rental agency (a large well known one btw) The hacker had to have gotten it there and because they had enough information they were able to provide very personal data which left me holding the bag and the bank unwilling to refund the money! It appeared that I had actually opened the accounts. I was fortunate enough to be able to contact the venders and they closed the ad accounts and refunded my cash! If I had not been keeping a close eye on my bank account I might not have discovered it in time to get those refunds. But even if it is something as simple as hacking your Facebook account and then sending out friend requests to your friends to enlarge their circle of potential victims it is un-nerving to say the lest. I still wonder how many people had their data mined through that bogus site thinking it was a legit site and are still paying the price today.
So how do you tell before your cleaned out or find that you have credit accounts with balances that you didn’t open or even know about? Check out the featured link below for tips on telling that you have been hacked before too much damage is done.
