Get Your HAM Radio License in a Week!

Being a HAM operator is something the majority of us agree would be ideal during a time of crisis long or short term, local or global, any time communications are interrupted or down. Information is not only the key to surviving in some situations but needed for making the best choices, knowing where and when to apply what resources can be a very import facet to surviving with the best quality of life possible.
HAM allows us one of the best amateur methods of communicating in the world. It isn’t reliant upon the infrastructure of the power grid, the cell towers, any servers or cables it skips all that and goes antenna to antenna without needing an enormous amount of power. They can be run off solar, wind, or even a converter and a battery. Better yet the range is worldwide and it’s the most used of the amateur communications systems so as long as there are other survivors someone will be out there.
The only hitch to the process (other than the need for some power and the know how to operate) is that you currently require a license. I know many folks feel that being licensed is a problem for a couple of reasons i.e… finances, testing issues, a license creates a record etc… and so they plan to have and not use the equipment until necessary. The small drawbacks need to be balanced against the overall good. If you are licensed now and using it now prior to the chaos not only, will you have the advantage of already being set up, knowing your equipment works for your purposes, and most important becoming a member of the HAM community and known to the others and more likely to be trusted by other surviving operators. You will also have the advantage of knowing them as well…. I know I would be very cautious of answering a transmission from an unknown operator during a manmade disaster. I would also be uneasy of giving out enough info to assure that community that I could be trusted when we wouldn’t know who might be covertly gathering info.
