Footwear for Your Emergency Kit
I can’t think of a single emergency situation that having a good pair of boots or at least hard soled shoes (flats) immediately handy wouldn’t be a blessing. All kinds of disasters leave debris of some kind, hot coals, broken glass, structural nails and wood pieces, shards of concrete, water runoff, snow and ice and even bugging out is something you don’t want to do bare foot or without appropriate footwear!
The majority of us have a pair, but is it where you can get to it without digging through your closet during a disaster, or stopping to pull it out of your bug out bag? I actually recommend we all have at least 2 pair, one that stays next to the bed and one we keep in our vehicle. Bedroom slippers are not the best for escaping fire or debris so having a pair where you can slip them on and go without stopping is wise and in your vehicle so that whether it is a dress shoe kind of day, or you are most comfortable and practically live in flip flops or tennis shoes you will always have those sturdy safe boots at hand.
I can actually give you a personal example. I awoke the other night to a huge crash; it sounded like a bomb had gone off in my supposedly empty daughter’s room. I jumped out of my bed into my boots, grabbed and loaded my pistol and went exploring. As I entered her now quiet dark room…. I heard the crunch of glass beneath my boots. Turning on her lights I found a terrified cat practically hanging on the ceiling and a shattered very heavy antique 3-way mirror! Not the ’emergency’ I had assumed but when I began cleaning up the mirror, I found some large shards embedded the outer sole of my boots. What started as the loss of a mirror could have ended with a trip to the emergency room for my feet!
