Driving Safely Through Protests, Mobs & Riots
One of the privileges that we have in America is the ability to gather and speak our minds without the threat of retaliation from our government. Unfortunately this right can and has been abused. Peaceful protests or gatherings can become a mob scene quickly and escalate to rioting in the blink of an eye. Or an perceived or actual injustice can result in rioting endangering and/or harming innocent bystanders, business owners, home owners, etc..
One of the most notorious of these occurrences was the case of Reginald Denny. A truck driver caught inadvertently in the mist of the 1992 Los Angeles riots. If you are young enough not to recall the story you can see it here >> Attack on Reginald Denny
A more current event occurred when a motorcycle rally called Hollywood‘s Block Party turned violent ending with the beating of Alexian Lien a vehicle driver caught in the rally and the crippling of Edwin Mieses the cyclist hit by Lien’s vehicle as he attempted to escape. For the details of the incident and the pursuant legal ramifications to all parties involved see the story here >> Hollywood Stuntz gang assault
This is a time in our country’s history where we are again seeing peaceful protests infiltrated by anarchists attempting to turn them into riots. Frustrating to everyone on either side of the protests, is current trend for protesters to gather on the roadways blocking traffic to draw attention to their cause or point of view . This creates a very volatile situation leading to scenarios where frightened or angry drivers find themselves surrounded by or blocked from moving forward by agitated and excitable protesters. These confrontations are expected to erupt again on inauguration day across the country.
Other than to just stay home, if that is possible, or avoiding the roadways all together. How can you prevent being in the middle of scenarios like that of Reginald Denny’s during the L.A. riots or of the Hollywood Stuntz assault? What is the best action for an uninvolved driver to take if surrounded by protesters, rioters or any mob? See the advice from The Expired Meter out of Chicago at the link below.
