DIY Rainwater Catchment Cistern
A while ago, one of our followers on our Facebook asked a question regarding her defunct cistern. One end had been breached by tree roots and the property owner before her had begun to fill it with odds and ends including concrete bricks. Her question to the group was should she on a tight budget try to salvage that cistern or complete the fill and start anew. The majority of responses advised her to ditch the old one and build her own as the current one had so many obvious issues that there was probably a dozen more that she was unable to see. Probably good practical advice. But much easier said than done on a budget.
You can purchase a readymade filtered cistern with all the pumps etc. to make use easy and practical. But that will put a real ding into your budget. Other above ground cisterns have to be refilled, which is more cost effective than city water services, but you aren’t then truly off grid. This DIY cistern is a rainwater catchment, and you are in total control of the size and method of removing and filtering the water for use.
