Coronavirus Parties-Immunity Building or Deadly?
Years ago some parents had what was called pox parties. Thinking that because the chicken pox are more dangerous to adults than to children that they were immunizing their children from a more dangerous case of the illness. Back then there was not a vaccination for the chicken pox.
I did not attend one of those parties nor was I prevented from playing with other children who were infected, so I did become infected as did my siblings. I had a mild case as did a brother and sister. However, my youngest brother did not fair so well. He had a horrendous case and still bears the scars all these years later. Fast forward to my own children, one daughter had the chicken pox before the other was born and without any particular caution her sister never got them as a child. Later in life I adopted more children, they were exposed at daycare. They all seemed to have mild cases for which I was grateful. However they did infect my older daughter who hadn’t had them as a child. She was more miserable than the children but suffered no long term effects. A month or more later, my son began acting strangely. Many tests later doctors discovered his case of chicken pox had spread to another organ in his body (I had no clue that could happen) his brain. He had seizures for several years after but did eventually recover.
The point of my chicken pox story is that you never know what you may be exposing some one too. Each body and each case of a disease is unique to the individual. The coronavirus that causes covid-19 is an unknown virus. We don’t know what long term effects may remain with those that survive. Nor can we predict who will survive and who won’t. We know those that are older and those with pre-existing conditions are more prone to death than others.. but others have also passed away. We also can not control the actions of others, so we can’t insure if we host one of these parties that the attendees will respect the lives of those more vulnerable in the population and avoid/isolate from them.
What do you think? Good idea or bad? Should there be consequences for having them? Would you attend one? See information on the two parties that authorities are aware of at this time at the links below
