Can a Power Plant Run Unmanned?

One of the most concerning thing about a
natural disaster is the loss of power. We might assume because we have back up power sources, a non-electric source of heat and light etc.. that we are all good and prepared for blizzards, tornados, wind storms or even an EMP. But in a serious long term SHTF event we can never be too ready. Most of the time when mother nature shakes her fist at us, she does so when it seems to be the lest convenient and when we are not near or ready to use our backup sources. What about street lights? Stop lights? 911 service? and those other conveniences that we don’t usually think twice about having.
When we know there is a good possibility of losing power we often (I do anyway) do a few extra preps, like filling the bathtub for toilet flushing, leave the office and head home, call my family and tell them to head home, and those kinds of things. But none of that will be available if the power is completely out in the entire area. So how long do we have if everyone is heading home including those that operate the power plant? Can they run unmanned and for how long? Definitely something to consider when making a bug in, bug out or get home plan. The website Answers thinks they have an answer for us.
