DIY Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder
I am sort of building a bit of a flock of a variety of birds for SHTF purposes with my bird feeders. At least that is how I justify insuring they have feed! I find that the birds do seem to recall just like my pets, where the food came from and return day after day. So if the SHTF event isn’t one that scares off the birds. That they will hopefully continue to come looking for their feed and we can make use of them.
However, now in normal times I really just love sitting on my deck and watching them squabble over bits of food, bring their babies by the feeder for lunch almost like they are teaching them manners for eating in the birdie restaurant! I am fortunate that we get several kinds of birds here in my location so it is really fascinating to watch all the different species interact, sing, and even gang up and chase off the cat!
The one annoying thing is when the squirrels get to the bird feed before the birds. I do think about the squirrels as a possible SHTF protein source as well especially when they are raiding the bird feeders! I do feed them from their own feeders on a different area of the property. It appears to me and maybe I am giving them human attributes that they don’t have… that they are conspiring to take the bird feed while preserving their own feed for snacking on the rest of the day. I didn’t realize this until I saw the little buggers taking the bird feed while their own feeders were still full. But let me forget to get their feeder filled and they are like small bushy tailed divas announcing that they are unhappy with the service here.
So I decided to give the birds a break and increase my enjoyment of watching them by making a DIY squirrel proof feeder. It was very inexpensive and super easy too. Check out the instructions at the link below
