Will You Recognize the Warning Signs?
How many times do we see news reports of disasters hitting unprepared populated areas? Too often, even once storm warnings and evacuation recommendations have been issued. These people more often than not, ignored the warning signs that disaster was headed their way. Would you have recognized the danger you were in?
One of the most well known folks who ignored both nature’s and man’s warning signs was Harry R. Truman who stubbornly refused to leave his home on Mount St. Helen’s prior to it’s eruption in May 1980. Speaking of the volcanic activity preceding the eruption and in interviews with reporters, he expressed his opinion that the danger from the volcano was exaggerated, saying, “I don’t have any idea whether it will blow[…] But I don’t believe it to the point that I’m going to pack up.”
Mr. Truman’s lodge is now under 150 feet (46 m) of volcanic landslide debris and his body has never been found.
