Chickens, very much like humans, have an internal clock per say that tells them its this time of day or night or this or that season. During the winter months they too like to hunker down and just keep warm! So part of convincing the hens to lay year round is to adapt their care to keep that internal clock of theirs working as though it were spring year round.  Part of this means extra light staving off the early darkness of winter and extra calories for keeping warm.
