Morale Boosting Strategies in a Crisis
In every BOB, 72 hour kit, vehicle kit and every other emergency kit for my group and family we have packed some simple comfort item. My item of choice has been a deck of cards and family photos for every bag I assist in packing. Considered non survival items by most. But I feel they are very important survival items!
The photos, practically so that you can show them to people you may meet up with along the way in hopes of finding a member who may have been separated from the group or if your the one separated to show in hopes that others have seen one or more and can help you reunite. Emotionally, to give you hope and a reason to keep your feet on the path out. In hard times it is difficult to keep your focus, being able to physically hold and look at your reason for keeping your chin up is imperative for some to maintain the I can and I will survive this attitude and without that attitude you will not survive. The most important survival tool you have even before knowledge, creativity, and adaptability is your attitude. If you think you can’t survive you won’t.
The second item is also duel use, the deck of cards. You may find yourself doing a lot of sitting and waiting if your in a situation where authorities are involved or if you are alone on the road waiting out storms, dangerous groups to pass, or the need for physical rest. You may find it difficult to “shut your mind off” and rest, doing something mindless like playing solitaire can help you with that. A deck of cards can also be a starting point for meeting like minded folks along the way. Sitting and playing a hand of cards can relax people enough for them to talk to each other, to learn what they have in common or what important thing they don’t have in common. It can bring a group of strangers together under difficult circumstances.
